Typhoon Dujuan Will Impact Taiwan on Mid Autumn Festival

Transportation News: 
Suhua Highway, North Cross-Island Highway(7), Yilan to Lishan highway are closed at noon. Dayulin to Toroko will be closed any time base on the typhoon strength. 
Highs Speed Train: the last schedule is at 3 pm for north and south bound.

Taiwan Railroad: 
West Coast railroad system: Northbound will be closed at 4 pm and Southbound will be closed at 5pm.

South Cross Island Railroad System is scheduled to close at 6 pm.  

East Coast Railroad System is closed.  

 

Update: You  might want to stock some water and food if you are in Taiwan especial in the north. It is super typhoon. Don't underestimate its strength. 

    These two pictures were taken in Penghu which is between Taiwan and China around 12 noon. The sea level is already rising. The high tide and the typhoon effects have already caused flood in a small village of  Penghu as the outskirt of the typhoon touched the east coast of Taiwan.

 It is 3 days Mid Autumn Festival holiday starting on Sept 26-28. Every one expects to have fun BBQ parties with friends and families. But things do not always go with plans especial the changes are effected by natural phenomenons. Unfortunately Typhoon Dujuan, the 7th typhoon that impacts Taiwan on this holiday since 2008, will be expected to effect Taiwan around the coming Monday of 28 and Tuesday of 29.      Also the high tide effects will be more enhanced because of the supermoon. The estimation of the high tide will reach 50-60 cm high. So if you are on the low ground areas or nearby rivers, you should be cautious for your safety and avoid visiting beaches. 
     Tawain Weather Bureau is expected to announce the land warning at 5:30 pm and issue heavy rain warning in Yilan County, Keelung City, Taipei, New Taipei City, Taoyuan City and Hsinchu County.

8/20 Long Wave Warning is issued: Effect on 8/20--21 on  Northeast, East, and South Coasts. The wave is 1.5 meter to 3 meter high. Be cautious when playing or walking on the beaches.

Typhoon Soudelor's Strength and Destruction

The highway to Wulai area is closed because of landslides and collapsed bridges. The residents depend on helicopters to deliver supplies and transportation. If you plan to visit Wulai, it may not be a good time.

Super Typhoon Jelawat Watching

     Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau expects to announce sea warning between Wednesday night (26) to Thursday morning(27). Typhoon Jelawa path will be close to Taiwan on the 28th and 29th.

Enough Typhoon Tambin Report!

The railroad system in the south is effected by the typhoon. Some schedules have been changed. The entire island is under the thread of typhoon Tembin, especial in the southern part of Taiwan.  The Alishan Scenic Area is closed.

The Aftermath of Typhoon Tembin

     Typhoon Tembin was no predicted to make landfall in Pintung County. Its damage to Taiwan was smaller than the expectation. It caused major power and flood problems in Pintung County (Kenting) and in Taitung County. Also agricultural product prices are being driven up because of crop losses.   

     But, it also caused some political disputes over the county governor's and city mayors decisions of announcing a day-off  during the typhoon period in the media and the public. Only the governor of Tainan made the right decision for not issuing a day-off when the typhoon hit Taiwan because Tainan was not in danger. 

     The strength of Tembin has weaken, but many weather experts predict it would make a circle and pass by the east parts of Taiwan to north. It could cause some problems in Taiwan again. We will have to wait and see, so be cautious.

Typhoon Tembin

8/24 Update:
Pingtung Peninsular has already accumulated more than 350 mm (138 inch) of rain within 3.5 hours. Some places are flooded. So be cautious when you are in the south of Taiwan. (The news was from my FB friends.)
Taiwan Railroad is cancelled its partial service toady. The government offices, including schools which are in the south of Taichung except Tainan City are closed. 

  


8/23 Typhoon Tembin is moving slower than expected.   Its route is also changed. Typhoon Bolaven is behind Tembin which may effect on the northeast.

which was issued this morning, Typhoon Tembin would
effect in Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pintung areas for more
than 108 hours.

Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF, the Centre)

Tropic Storm Kai-Tak

8/15 Update:

TCWB predicted that Typhoon Kai-Tak won't make landfall in Taiwan. However, it will cause heavy rainfall in the south and southeast parts of Taiwan.

Taiwan Central Weather Bureau might announce a sea warning in the afternoon and issue a land warning tonight or tomorrow morning. The entire island will rain tomorrow. 

The commuter boat schedules to Green Island will be canceled on Aug. 15. 

Weather Warning

8/6 11:30
TCWB has issued a north sea warning of Typhoon Haikui. People should avoid water activities on the north, northeast, east coast, Green Island and Orchid Island.

Torrential Rain warning is also issued.

Highway Condition Update After Typhoon Soala

Highway 9 : Suhua Highway from Suao to Hualien is closed and would be expected to open on Aug 10.

Typhoon Saola Warning

                  Holy Cow! No body was injured.

 When the news correspondence vehicle got hit by this giant falling rock, the correspondent was conducting news and the driver got out for smoking. This picture was posted on 呂國寶's FB who is also a news correspondent for a TV

station. Updated by Mr.呂國寶 on his FB page that the driver was in the van when it happened. Fortunately, he wasn't injured by the falling rock but he was stunned by the rock.   

THSR will run its schedule at every 00/20/40 and stops at every station. For tomorrow schedule will be announced before 7 PM.  

Typhoon Soala made its first landfall in Hualien County at 3:30 am. After making a circle, it entered the Pacific Ocean again. TCWB predicts it might make another landfall. 

                   This picture of Xindian River was taken and posted on FB of Professor Khîn-huānn Lí around 8:30 am. The bad news is the high tide will be at 10:30 am and 23 pm which means the rivers will be overflown in Taipei. So it is extremely dangerous for people to close to river areas.

Update : 6/20 Typhoon Talim

     Typhoon Talim unusually occurred in the South China Sea which is the birthplace of Plum Rain from May to June and its route is predicted to go through the Taiwan Strait without landfall in Taiwan or China. It seems understand the sensitive relationship between Taiwan and China. So it takes the midline of the Taiwan Strait to be its path which makes it the first typhoon to break the record of the normal occur and path pattern in the typhoon history.   
     The weather bureau predicts the onset of the typhoon will start this afternoon. But the most dangerous part is not the typhoon itself but the south westerly circulation which causes the torrential rain. It means that the typhoon has gone through Taiwan but the most critical situation would still remain in Taiwan.

      There are some roads and places have been closed due to the typhoon like Taipei Gondola and schools. Taiwan High Speed Rail has changed its schedule. Check road and transportation condition before you go. You can call 1999 in Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung for any information.

       There were still some earthquakes which occurred on the 19 and 2o of June. The typhoon news is the most important news to catch people's attention now. 

     I won't set in front of my computer to watch the typhoon and flood situation for you for next couple of days. I wish everyone in Taiwan are safe.   

Earthquakes and Typhoons Strike(d) Taiwan!

     Japan just had a 6.5 magnitude earthquake which happened a few hours ago. But there were more than 40 superfacial earthquakes that occured in the Hualien area on the east coast in the past 2-3 days. The director of the weather bureau warned local people to be prepared for the chance of a magnitude earthquake of 6 to 7 to strike Taiwan in the near future. ""東部地區最近地

==> 6/18 update: I read about earthquakes news today and a lady who works at the weather bureau said these earthquakes were aftershocks. So people shouldn't worry too much about these aftershocks. However, travelers should still be careful about the unstable rocks which were caused by the earthquake's and rain in the mountain areas.  

     As I wrote this article in the States, there were 10 earthquakes that happened again in Hualien. Below is the earthquake information which occured on the 17 and 18th of June.

     Another threat is two typhoons which are near Taiwan. Typhoon Talim is predicted to strike Taiwan and Typhoon Guchol will pass by Taiwan. But the effect of these two typhoons will bring torrential rain to Taiwan. So if you are in Taiwan, please be aware of  the weather situation and avoid for outdoor activities in the mountain areas and be careful for the floods and landslides.
